چکیده

basic paradigm that computer programs employ is known as “search and evaluate.” Their static evaluation is arguably more primitive than the perceptual one of humans. Yet the intelligence emerging from them is phenomenal. A human spectator cannot tell the difference between a brilliant computer game and one played by Kasparov. Chess played by today’s machines looks extraordinary, full of imagination and creativity. Such elements may be the reason that computers are superior to humans in the sport of kings, at least for the moment. Not surprisingly, the superiority of computers over humans in chess provokes antagonism. The frustrated critics often revert to the analogy of a competition between a racing car and a human being, which by now has become a cliché. In 2007, Amir Ban (my partner) and I flew to Elista, capital of Kalmkya, to take part in a chess match dubbed “The Ultimate Computer Chess Challenge.” Our program, Deep Junior, then the world computer chess champion, was to play a match against Deep Fritz, which a few months earlier had defeated Vladimir Kramnik, the world’s human chess champion. Parallel to the computers’ match, at the same venue, some of the best human chess players assembled to play in the semifinal tournament for the world title. FIDE, the international organizing body, had asked top commentators to annotate the games in both competitions. Among the commentators was Boris Spasky, the famous former world champion. Some of the games between Deep Junior and Deep Fritz were exciting: in one of them, Deep Junior was able to discover an important theoretical novelty in the Sicilian defense. After sacrificing no fewer than four pawns, it managed to find a winning Articles

Global health diplomacy: a ‘Deus ex Machina’ for international development and relations; Comment on “A Ghost in the Machine? Politics in Global Health Policy”

Brugha and Bruen (2014) raise a number of compelling issues related to the interaction between politics and policy in the global health context. The first question that their views invite is whether this is, at heart, best characterized as a benign or malign influence. Many commentators have suggested that this overlap should be discouraged (see, for example, Marseille et al 2002; Thomas & Webe...

Deus ex machina and the aesthetics of proof

C Unexpectedness and inevitability, two of the aesthetic qualities G.H. Hardy identified as being properties of beautiful proofs [Har, §], together seem paradoxical: how can something be seen as both unexpected and inevitable? Two possibilities are that the inevitability only becomes apparent in hindsight, or that the strategy of the proof is unexpected but, once chosen, proceeds inevitably...

Invariant differential operators

on the complex upper half-plane H, provably invariant under the linear fractional action of SL2(R), but it is oppressive to verify this directly. Worse, the goal is not merely to verify an expression presented as a deus ex machina, but, rather to systematically generate suitable expressions. An important part of this intention is understanding reasons for the existence of invariant operators, a...

Deus ex Machina

Once there was a time when mainframes walked the earth and reigned supreme over all the land. Lowly users were far too unclean and unschooled to commune with these vastly superior beings made of silicon and software, and so there arose among us a programming priesthood who served as intermediaries between human and machine. Like the monks of old, who studiously labored over the production of el...

The Impact of Transfer Payments

This is a somewhat mechanistic (and simplistic) exegesis of the production-distribution linkage. However, it is one with profound implications for public policy. What it suggests, particularly where collective action is concerned, is the possibility of a social “taking” of wealth (or income) from some to be then disbursed to others considered to be more deserving. According to Mill, such a redi...
